Biography
Based in Ohio, Laura Millar (b. 1991) is equal parts performer and composer.
As a freelance trumpet performer, Laura has played for local orchestras, churches, and also enjoys playing cornet in the Central Ohio Brass Band. She is a free-improviser, and while many of her compositions are intended to be performed by others, she also creates fully-improvised pieces for her own solo performances.
Her compositional work focuses on music for solo trumpet (often with electronics), trumpet ensemble, and brass band. She describes her style as ambient-inspired, writing pieces that are slow, melodic, and highly expressive. She is inspired by beauty, nature, and bittersweetness.
Laura has a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Ohio Northern University and a Master of Music degree in Performance from Wright State University. She is also a member of the International Women’s Brass Conference. Laura was a participant in the 2022 Westben Performer-Composer Residency program, and her flugelhorn trio “Requiem” was selected in the 2022 Diversify the Stand/Trumpeter’s Multitrack Competition Call for Scores.
Laura is a sensitive introvert and enjoys reading, coffee, nature walks, and spending time with her grey cat, Ike.
My mission is to create music that brings people whatever it is they need in the moment. I believe that beautiful music has the power to move people: split hearts open and fill them up. My mission is to create those moments for others through my music. Everyone carries their own unique baggage and experiences, and I am fueled by the idea of being able to simply create something authentic and have it subsequently go into someone’s heart and meet them where they are. I believe in the healing power of that experience.
I am also passionate about changing the stereotype that trumpet music of value must be “louder-higher-faster”. Through my performances and my compositional contributions, I hope to add to the landscape of trumpet repertoire new music that focuses more on messages, emotions, and connection.
